If you have ever wondered, "why did my attar scent change?" after opening a favorite bottle, you know the disappointment of finding a rich, beautiful fragrance transformed into something flat, sharp, or sour.
As perfume creators, this is one of our biggest heartbreaks—and recently, it happened right here at Al Faris Perfumes.
Today, we want to take you behind the scenes of what happened to a batch of our signature scent,Qiblatul Wafa, explain the science of how heat affects perfume oils, and share how you can protect your collection.
The Story: How Heat Ruined Our Signature Attar
A few days ago during a severe heatwave, our main decant bottle of Qiblatul Wafa—our signature sweet, gourmand candy-sugar attar—was resting on a stand near a window. Even though we kept the curtains closed to block direct sunlight, the heat trapped near the window glass was intense.
When we went to fill a small bottle for a customer order, we opened the decant to check it. To our dismay, a noticeable attar scent change had occurred—the sweet, projecting gourmand notes were completely gone. In their place was a flat, sour, "off" smell. The entire bottle was ruined, and we had to dispose of it immediately.
This got us thinking: If this can happen in our workshop, it can easily happen in your home.
The Science: What Happens When Attar Gets Overheated?
Attars are highly concentrated, alcohol-free perfume oils. Whether an attar is composed of 100% natural botanical oils, 100% synthetic fragrance compounds, or a modern blend of both, heat is the ultimate enemy of fragrance.
Here is why:
Chemical Breakdown (Thermal Oxidation): Both natural essential oils and synthetic fragrance molecules are organic chemical structures.High temperatures act as an accelerator, causing these molecules to break apart and react with any air inside the bottle.
Loss of Top Notes: Gourmand, sweet, fruity, and floral notes rely on delicate volatile molecules.Heat causes these volatile compounds to break down fast, leaving behind only the heavier base notes—or sour chemical byproducts.
Synthetic vs. Natural: There is a common misconception that synthetic fragrances are "indestructible" or "fake." In reality, synthetic compounds are carefully synthesized chemicals. They react to external temperature shifts just as sensitive natural oils do! A synthetic attar going bad in heat is not a sign of a "fake" product—it is basic chemistry.
How to Properly Store Your Attar to Prevent Heat Damage
To ensure your attars remain as fresh, sweet, and long-lasting as the day you bought them, follow these quick storage rules:
Keep Away from Direct Heat & Light:Store your bottles inside a closed drawer, wooden box, or dark cupboard.Avoid windowsills, car dashboards, or shelves near heaters.
Avoid Bathroom Humidity:Bathrooms experience constant temperature and steam fluctuations, which degrade perfume oils quickly.
Keep Caps Tightly Sealed:Oxygen speeds up the breakdown process, so always ensure your bottles are tightly shut.
